What are the best suburbs of Portland, Oregon? (schools, safety, recreation for kids)?

Our family is considering a move and Portland is on our list of metro areas. What are some suburbs or smaller towns (within 30 min of downtown) offering the best quality of life for a young family? Things to consider: real estate cost (more bang for your buck), schools, extracurricular offerings for kids - parks/rec/arts organizations, community feel with a "smart" and energetic vibe. A lot to ask I realize, but hopefully locals can steer in the right direction.
