Expropriate vs misappropriate vs appropriate?

Appropriate and misappropriate are basically the same, but the second gives more an idea of a robbery. Expropriate is a legal preocedure by the national, state or city government to take, for example, someone's land or part of it for an airport, highway, etc. or an old building so it can be used by the community as a historic landmark, museum, etc. This exprpropiation is done with the right of the owner to receive a compensation, either another piece of land, building or cash.
